The name G Plan dates back to 1953 when David Gomme began making furniture under this name, but before that his Grandfather Ebenezer Gomme had been in the same line of business since 1898. The Gomme family were obviously well versed in furniture design and production and this shows through the early models of sofas and chairs produced through the 1950s' and 1960s'. This time in the UK was one of emmense changes with so many people wanting to make a fresh start in post war Britain. The designs of G Plan were there to capture the imaginations and delight the senses. One of the many revolutionary new ideas as to sell matching chairs and sofas.... it's true! Nowadays we would hardly believe it but before G Plan, suites of upholstery rarely matched each other. Many households never bought new furniture as it was handed down from generation to generation, and was often re upholstered time after time.
The Gomme family retired from the business in 1987 but since then G Plan Upholstery has grown to one of the largest furniture manufacturers in the UK. In the 1990s they blossomed with the launch of many top selling designs that retailers all over the UK wanted to satisfy customer demands, and into the new millenium a purpose built factory in Wiltshire was the new home to G Plan Upholstery.
